Unclear Audio Recordings Hinder Besigye's Alleged Geneva Plot Trial

The prosecution’s case against Dr. Kizza Besigye and his alleged co-conspirators, accused of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government, is facing challenges due to the poor quality of key audio evidence. Recordings purportedly capturing a meeting in Geneva have been played in court, but their unclear nature has raised significant doubts.

The recordings, lasting over two hours, feature four individuals, including Dr. Besigye, Joel Wakayima, Frank Kehiriwe, and Andrew Wilson (alias Orlando), allegedly discussing the plot. However, the audio is frequently indistinct, making it difficult for the judge, lawyers, and court attendees to discern the full conversation.

During the court session presided over by Justice Emmanuel Baguma, a heavy downpour outside reportedly further hampered the audibility of the recordings. At times, court users were observed dozing off, highlighting the tedious and unclear nature of the proceedings. The prosecution, led by Mr. Thomas Jatiko, repeatedly paused the playback, requesting witness Andrew Wilson to clarify ambiguous sections.

Wilson testified that the meetings aimed at destabilizing Uganda’s economy through the injection of fake currency, specifically mentioning a plan involving $500,000 to be followed by further investments. He also revealed his role as an informant, stating he was working for Ugandan security services and transmitting intelligence gathered on Besigye and his associates. He confessed to destroying original documents related to the plot to avoid detection at airport security.

In one of the clearer moments, Wilson recounted asking Dr. Besigye about his desire for change, to which the latter responded affirmatively. Dr. Besigye, Obeid Lutale, and Capt. Denis Oola have pleaded not guilty to treason charges related to alleged meetings in Uganda and abroad between 2023 and 2024.
