Zambian Golfer Chalwe Leads Uganda Open, Kasozi in Hot Pursuit

Zambian golfer Gilbert Chalwe has surged to the top of the leaderboard at the 85th Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Golf Open, overtaking Uganda’s Joseph Kasozi. Chalwe carded an impressive seven-under-par 65 on the second day at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC), moving him to five-under overall and a one-shot lead.

Chalwe, who is based at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club in South Africa, described his exceptional round as a result of “keeping it simple” and committing to his targets. He recorded birdies on holes 3, 8, 18 (par-5s), 7, 16, 18 (par-4s), and 6 (par-3).

Uganda’s Joseph Kasozi, who led after the first day with a 68, could only manage a level-par 72 in his second round. He now sits tied for second place at four-under overall, alongside Zambian compatriot Dominic Musonda. Musonda, who spent the last year focusing on his mechanical engineering studies, also shot a 68 on the second day.

“It was just trying to keep it simple. Hitting the points in play and also committing to my target,” Chalwe commented on his remarkable round. He added, “You can’t win the tournament on the first or second day but you can lose it.” Chalwe’s performance marks his first tournament in Uganda, having been persuaded to travel by his friends Musonda and Musamba Kapoma.

Kasozi acknowledged the pressure but remained optimistic. “The margin (with Chalwe) is small but I am still good to go. I am not under pressure. My game is good,” he stated, despite struggling on the greens during his second round.

Uganda captain John Musiimenta is in fourth place at two-under overall, with Zambian Musamba Kapoma rounding out the top five at one-over. The tournament continues with the third round on Thursday.
