A witness in the ongoing treason trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye has presented explosive testimony, claiming the opposition leader revealed President Yoweri Museveni’s movements to plotters.
The witness, identified as Andrew Wilson, also known as Orlando, told the court that Dr. Besigye allegedly stated that President Museveni primarily resides in Kampala, information crucial for a planned assassination.
According to Wilson’s testimony, the alleged plot aimed to assassinate President Museveni and subsequently incite a civil uprising, creating an opportunity for Dr. Besigye to assume leadership. The witness further claimed that Dr. Besigye would have welcomed blame for the killing falling on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
During the proceedings, Wilson recounted advising Dr. Besigye and an associate, Joel Wakayima, to keep the identity of the intended “hitman” confidential.
The testimony also detailed an alleged plan to transport weapons, including drones and hand grenades, into the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo via aircraft. Mahagi airstrip in Ituri Province was reportedly chosen for its alleged control by local populations rather than the Kinshasa government.
Dr. Besigye reportedly cautioned his co-conspirators about the potential presence of Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in eastern DRC, which could have jeopardized the operation.
This testimony is part of the prosecution’s case against Dr. Besigye, Obeid Lutale, and Capt. Oola, who are accused of participating in meetings between 2023 and 2024 to allegedly plot the overthrow of the government. The accused have denied all charges. Dr. Besigye is being tried in absentia after a previous courtroom incident.
