Boda boda Riders Key to Alleged Coup Plot, Court Hears

The High Court has heard claims that boda boda riders were identified as a crucial group to incite chaos and destabilize Kampala as part of a supposed plot to overthrow the government. The first prosecution witness, Andrew Wilson, also known as Orlando, presented this information during his testimony in the treason trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and two others.

Mr. Wilson stated that during a meeting to plan the alleged government overthrow, boda boda riders were referred to as “expendables.” He told the court that Dr. Besigye decided to mobilize these riders to disrupt Kampala and the country, with the ultimate goal of assassinating the President and seizing power by force.

This alleged plan, presented in relation to audio recordings of meetings purportedly held in Geneva in January 2024, also included targeted attacks on specific individuals. The witness mentioned that attacks were considered against the Prime Minister, Ms. Robinah Nabbanja, and her residence.

Furthermore, the court heard that the group discussed attacking public locations frequented by government officials and their supporters. An associate of Dr. Besigye, Joel Wakayima, reportedly suggested targeting places like Café Javas, near Acacia Mall, due to its popularity among government sympathizers. The stated objective of these attacks was to advance their political agenda, instill fear, and destabilize the Ugandan economy.

This testimony forms part of the prosecution’s case against Dr. Besigye, his aide Obeid Lutale, and UPDF Captain Denis Oola. The hearing is scheduled to continue.
