Bunyoro University Construction Set to Begin, Shs4 Billion Allocated

The long-awaited construction of Bunyoro University is on the horizon, following the approval of architectural designs. The UPDF Engineering Brigade has been identified to undertake the initial phase of the project.

Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, announced that Shs4 billion has been allocated in the current financial year to kickstart the construction, beginning with a multipurpose building. “We plan to start the phase with the available resources as we mobilise for additional funds. Government remains committed to the establishment of Bunyoro University,” Ogwang stated during a parliamentary sitting.

This development follows a motion moved by Hoima City Woman Representative, Hon. Asinansi Nyakato, advocating for the university’s establishment. Nyakato highlighted that the delay in establishing Bunyoro Public University has hindered equitable access to affordable higher education for the region’s residents.

She emphasized the university’s crucial role in regional equity, skills development, and preparing the local population for Uganda’s burgeoning oil and gas sector. The university is intended to offer relevant technical and professional training, foster research and innovation, and equip locals to participate effectively in the oil economy.

Fellow MPs, including Hon. Onesimus Twinamasiko and Hon. Ismail Kasule, voiced their support, stressing the need for programs aligned with the oil industry and the issue of equity, given that Bunyoro, with 13 districts, lacks a public university.

Hon. Jane Avur Pacuto suggested integrating the university into the National Development Plan IV, citing its potential to create employment, boost human capital, and expand the national tax base. The first phase of infrastructure development is estimated to cost Shs177.5 billion, with ongoing efforts to secure additional funding from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
