Daniel Canowira's Five-Year Tenure Propels Black Pirates to Rugby Dominance

Daniel Canowira is concluding his tenure as chairman of the Black Pirates rugby club, leaving behind a legacy of strengthened governance, substantial commercial growth, and on-field success.

Canowira, who has been involved with the club since 2002 as a player, captain, coach, and director, took over the chairmanship in June 2021. He inherited a club with a history of coming close but not clinching major titles, a narrative he was determined to change.

“We said, let’s be the best that we can in governance, in accountability, in coaching and in fitness,” Canowira stated. “And if you’re the best in every department, then winning just comes naturally.”

During his five years, Canowira, alongside a dedicated team, focused on building strong partnerships rather than just seeking sponsorships. This approach saw the number of sponsors increase from two to about nine, with cash sponsorship growing by over 200% and in-kind sponsorship skyrocketing by approximately 2,900%.

This commercial development directly fueled on-field achievements. The club secured three Uganda Rugby Premiership titles (2023, 2025, 2026), a Uganda Rugby Sevens title in 2023, four Rujumba Sevens titles, and a Uganda Cup triumph. Pirates also became the first Ugandan side in over fifty years to reach the regional Enterprise Cup final.

Canowira’s leadership also navigated challenging times, including the loss of club stalwarts and unpopular decisions like increasing gate prices to Shs15,000. He views these as necessary steps for the club’s growth.

As he transitions to an advisory role, Canowira expressed confidence in his successor, James Byaruhanga, and believes the club is stronger than when he started. His departure is guided by principles of democratic governance and a belief in allowing new leadership to emerge.

“You do your part. You let someone else come and do their part,” he remarked, emphasizing the collective effort behind Pirates’ rise. His predecessor, Eric Butiime, praised his exceptional legacy, noting the five major titles and significant commercial growth achieved in four years.
