Kagadi Town Council in Kagadi District is actively seeking Shs6 billion to implement a comprehensive 10-year urban development strategy. This ambitious plan aims to significantly expand the town’s current one-kilometer radius to two kilometers, bringing several surrounding settlements under its administrative umbrella. Key objectives include upgrading infrastructure, attracting investment, and increasing locally generated revenue, with projections showing a potential rise from the current Shs700 million annually to Shs6 billion upon full implementation.
The rapid growth in population and commercial activity has placed considerable strain on existing urban infrastructure, including roads, markets, and drainage systems. To preempt future congestion and unplanned development, the town leadership plans to integrate areas like Kamiranjojo, Kitooro, and Kitonzi into the town’s network. This expansion will include the creation of a proposed circular road around the central business area to alleviate traffic and open up new commercial opportunities.
Further development proposals encompass the construction of eight temporary markets within the expanded zones to support local trade, alongside improvements to roads, schools, water, and electricity supply. The plan also highlights the potential for developing hotels and an airstrip, contributing to the town’s overall appeal and economic viability. Leaders believe these developments will strengthen Kagadi’s bid for municipal status and create a more welcoming environment for investors.
Discussions are underway with residents in the targeted expansion areas, who have reportedly given their consent to the plan. The financing strategy includes a mix of local revenue, government support, and contributions from development partners and residents. Several stakeholders, including traders and local organizations, have voiced support, with proposals for dedicated development accounts and sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting being considered to ensure the plan’s success and long-term viability.
