Kiboga Prison Warder Accused of Four Murders Faces Trial

The trial of prison warder Moses Anguyo, accused of a brutal quadruple homicide, has officially begun at the High Court in Kiboga. Anguyo faces charges for the murders of two of his superiors within the Uganda Prisons Service, along with two civilians, an incident that occurred at Kiboga Central Prison on February 23, 2026.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed the commencement of the trial, highlighting the gravity of the charges. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga is presiding over the case, which also involves three co-accused individuals: Peter Anziku, Dickson Okuonzu, and Hellen Amviko. These individuals are alleged to have assisted Anguyo. The trial was initially postponed due to funding issues within the Judiciary but has now secured the necessary resources.
Particulars of the offense detail that Anguyo, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the deaths of Prison Officer Bright Akishuri, Prison Officer ASP Hope Catherine, Sarah Ayebare, and Alson Niwagaba. The charges extend beyond murder to include two counts of aggravated robbery and threatening violence. It is alleged that Anguyo robbed a civilian of clothing using an SMG rifle and also threatened to shoot a superior officer.
The co-accused are charged with aiding Anguyo to escape prosecution between February 23 and March 27, 2026. The incident sent shockwaves through Kiboga, with early morning gunshots creating panic. Eyewitness accounts suggest ASP Hope Catherine died instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries shortly after being transported to Kiboga Hospital. A one-year-old child, Alson Niwagaba, also tragically died from bullet wounds.
Following the incident, Anguyo reportedly fled and was later apprehended in Aru, Democratic Republic of Congo, before being extradited to Uganda to face justice. The commencement of this trial is anticipated to bring closure to the families of the deceased and the wider community.
