Kyankwanzi District Benefits from Shs5.8 Billion Clean Water Projects

Kyankwanzi District is set to experience a transformation in its water accessibility with the recent commissioning of two major water projects, collectively valued at Shs5.8 billion. These initiatives, funded by the World Bank, aim to provide clean and safe drinking water to an estimated 15,000 families residing in 12 villages across the Nkandwa and Bananywa sub-counties.

Officials, including Deputy Resident District Commissioner Perusi Kabale, highlighted the projects as a crucial step towards improving livelihoods and reducing the daily burdens on women and children who have long trekked for water. The Nkandwa project, costing Shs2.8 billion, features a solar-powered pumping system, a reservoir, and distribution networks serving five villages and around 5,000 families. It also includes sanitation facilities for Kasoolo Secondary School.

The Bananywa sub-county project, named Kikonge-Nakasero, involved an investment of Shs3 billion. This scheme includes multiple pumping stations, solar power, staff housing, and extensive transmission and distribution networks, designed to benefit approximately 10,000 families across seven villages. These villages include Kiteredde, Maiilo, Kirimbi, Bananywa, Kisenyi, Kikonge, and Nakasero.

Local leaders are urging residents to utilize the new facilities responsibly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining hygiene and protecting the infrastructure to prevent a return to unsafe water sources. The projects are expected to have a lifespan of around 20 years with proper upkeep, and residents are encouraged to contribute to ongoing maintenance costs. The successful completion of these projects by Ambitious Company Limited was acknowledged, marking a significant stride in the government’s commitment to extending clean water access to rural communities.
