Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda employees recently gathered for a special thanksgiving Mass to mark their return to work following a challenging 30-day shutdown.

The event, held at Greenhill Academy in Kampala, saw hundreds of staff members, led by NMG Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa, express gratitude for guidance through the period of uncertainty and disruption.

Leading the Mass, Rev. Fr. Deogratias Kiibi Kateregga, emphasized the importance of learning from the experience. He described the reopening as a “moment of restoration,” where “the gates are open once again, our microphones are alive once again, the pens move across the paper and the fingers move across keyboards.”

Fr. Kiibi encouraged staff to view the shutdown not as a defeat, but as a catalyst for personal and professional growth. He urged them to develop contingency plans for future challenges, noting that “every setback is a setup for a comeback.”

He also called on journalists to remain courageous and to continue speaking truth with love and respect, especially for vulnerable communities. “When a voice is locked away, people are left in prison,” he stated, urging them not to let fear impede their work.

Ms. Nsibirwa echoed the sentiments, thanking God, staff, audiences, advertisers, and the public for their support. She highlighted the “public goodwill” NMG enjoys and urged staff to protect the trust placed in the organization. She also encouraged forgiveness and focus on their work, stating, “My life really changed since the shutdown, but I never live in fear.”

The staff reflected on their resilience and the need to remain committed to their mission of storytelling and serving their audiences.
