A profound sadness has enveloped Tooro Kingdom following the announcement of the passing of His Majesty, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The king died on Thursday evening at the age of 34, as confirmed by Tooro Kingdom premier Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki.
News of the monarch’s death began circulating on social media in the early afternoon, with initial reports being dismissed by the kingdom. However, in a late-night statement, Premier Akiiki confirmed the tragic news, stating the Omukama passed away around 10:00 p.m.
King Oyo ascended to the throne as a three-year-old in 1995, becoming one of Africa’s youngest reigning monarchs. His reign of 31 years saw him champion various initiatives aimed at improving the lives of his people. Key among these were efforts to promote education, empower the youth, boost tourism, conserve the environment, and foster economic development within the kingdom.
The Tooro Kingdom institution has assured its subjects of continuity, with Premier Akiiki indicating that King Oyo leaves behind a son who will be the heir. The formal announcement of the prince and the succession process will adhere to the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
