The Tooro Kingdom is in deep grief following the passing of its beloved monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The 34-year-old King died on Thursday evening, an announcement confirmed by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Mr. Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” stated Mr. Rwomiire. He described the King’s death as an “immeasurable loss” to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and Uganda as a whole.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Prime Minister urged the subjects of Tooro, known as Abatooro, to remain united, calm, and prayerful. He provided assurance that the traditional structures of the kingdom are in place to maintain stability during this transitional period. “The continuity of the Crown is assured,” Mr. Rwomiire emphasized, noting that an heir has been identified and will be formally revealed according to kingdom traditions.
King Oyo’s reign began at an exceptionally young age. Born on April 16, 1992, he ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, at just three years old, following the death of his father. His early reign was managed by a regency until he assumed full responsibilities upon turning 18. Throughout his tenure, King Oyo was a prominent advocate for youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and health, serving as a global ambassador for HIV/AIDS awareness and spearheading the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045.
Details regarding funeral arrangements and mourning periods are expected to be communicated by the Royal Family and kingdom officials soon. The kingdom appeals for solidarity and respect during this period of national mourning.
