Buganda Kingdom Mourns King Oyo, Highlights Strong Historical Ties with Tooro

Buganda Kingdom has joined the people of Tooro in mourning the tragic death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru. Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga conveyed the condolences of Buganda, describing King Oyo as the “younger brother” of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and emphasizing that his demise is a loss not only to Tooro but to the entire nation.

Katikkiro Mayiga highlighted the profound and enduring relationship between the Buganda and Tooro kingdoms, which dates back to the formation of Tooro in the 1830s. He recalled that members of the royal families have historically supported each other, noting that the Kabaka of Buganda was among those named as guardians when King Oyo ascended the throne at the tender age of three in 1995.

“We have always worked together; we have always planned together in the interest of the people of the two kingdoms,” Mayiga stated, underscoring the collaborative spirit between the monarchies. He lamented that King Oyo’s death signifies a significant loss, particularly given his plans for preserving Tooro’s rich heritage and enhancing the welfare of his subjects.

Buganda’s Princess Katrina Sarah Ssangalyambogo also paid tribute, characterizing King Oyo as a national figure who matured into his role as monarch under the public’s gaze. “He ascended the throne as a child, and grew before the eyes of the nation. He carried the crown with courage, with wisdom beyond his years, and with a love for his people that never wavered,” she said.

Princess Ssangalyambogo affirmed the deep historical and familial bond between Buganda and Tooro, stating, “When one house mourns, the other stands beside it.” King Oyo, who reigned for nearly 31 years, passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34.
