Bunyoro mourns King Oyo, remembering his love for his people and kingdom

The Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV. Bunyoro’s Prime Minister, Andrew Byakutaga, described the untimely passing as a significant loss, particularly at a time when the people of Tooro still anticipated King Oyo’s guidance.

Speaking from the Bunyoro Rukurato Chambers in Hoima, Byakutaga emphasized the profound historical and cultural connections between Bunyoro and Tooro, making the demise of the Tooro monarch especially poignant. “It is unfortunate to have the king, with whom Bunyoro shares a lot in common, die at an early age,” he stated.

Byakutaga urged both Bunyoro and Tooro subjects to remain composed and seek divine strength during this period of grief. He extended heartfelt condolences to King Oyo’s mother, Best Kemigisa, his sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, and the entire Tooro community.

Bunyoro acknowledged King Oyo’s contributions during his reign, highlighting his success in fostering unity, peace, and encouraging productive endeavors among his subjects to enhance their livelihoods. His efforts in promoting tourism in the Tooro region were also recognized, contributing to Fort Portal’s designation as a tourism city.

Hajji Bruhan Kyakuhaire, Bunyoro’s Minister of Culture and Traditions, echoed the sentiments of shock and pledged Bunyoro’s solidarity with Tooro during this mourning period. He noted the shared cultural similarities, including pet names, rituals, and customs, that bind the two kingdoms.

Kyakuhaire called for unity and resilience, encouraging subjects of both kingdoms to maintain faith and speak with one voice to navigate through this challenging time. King Oyo, who ascended the Tooro throne as a child, passed away at the age of 32.
