Bunyoro Region Transformed by Shs540 Billion Afcon Infrastructure Boost

The Bunyoro Sub-region is undergoing a substantial infrastructure overhaul, with the Ugandan government allocating Shs545 billion to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament. This extensive investment package is dedicated to enhancing sports venues, accommodation, road networks, and healthcare services across the region, which will co-host the event with Kenya and Tanzania.

The commitment, announced earlier this year, aims to address existing infrastructure deficits and ensure Bunyoro can effectively host the influx of visitors, teams, and officials expected during the tournament. Beyond the immediate needs of Afcon, the projects are designed to foster long-term development and provide enduring benefits for the local population.

Key sports initiatives include the development of the Sir Tito Winyi Sports Academy in Hoima District, a Shs17 billion project set to feature multiple pitches, including an artificial turf, and extensive support facilities. This academy joins other Afcon-related training facilities such as the Hoima Booma training ground and the King George Stadium in Masindi, which is undergoing a Shs20 billion upgrade. These facilities are strategically linked to the main Hoima City Stadium, a separate Shs487 billion investment.

Significant financial support, totaling Shs101 billion, is also being channeled into upgrading hotels in Hoima and Masindi through soft loans. This initiative is intended to enhance accommodation capacity and ensure hotels meet the international standards required for Afcon delegations. The hospitality sector is actively engaging with advisors from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to meet these requirements.

Furthermore, Shs91 billion is earmarked for critical health infrastructure, including the transformation of Buseruka Health Centre III into a Health Centre IV and upgrades at Masindi General Hospital and Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. Road networks around Hoima City Stadium are also being improved, with several key routes receiving upgrades to enhance accessibility. The overall investment includes a Shs182 billion allocation for a passenger terminal at Kabalega International Airport and funds for city beautification and municipal improvements.

Beyond the tournament, these developments are expected to create employment opportunities, boost local economies, and establish permanent centers for sports talent development and improved healthcare access in the Bunyoro region. Local leaders have expressed optimism about the legacy of these projects, emphasizing their potential to benefit residents long after Afcon 2027 concludes.
