DRC Airstrip Allegedly Tapped as Escape Route Post-Assassination Plot

A clandestine escape plan involving an airstrip in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was allegedly devised by opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associates, the High Court in Kampala heard this week. The prosecution’s key witness, Andrew Wilson, also known as Orlando, testified that Mahagi airstrip in eastern DRC was identified as a potential exit point from Uganda after a purported plot to assassinate President Yoweri Museveni.

Wilson told the court that Dr. Besigye had specifically mentioned Mahagi due to the presence of two airstrips. One was official and under Kinshasa’s control, while the other was reportedly unofficial and managed by a local chief. This unofficial facility, according to the witness, would have allowed the group to evade immigration procedures, facilitating a smoother departure.

During his testimony, Wilson stated that Dr. Besigye had indicated his familiarity with the local chief, which would have ensured easy passage. Furthermore, the witness claimed Dr. Besigye revealed he had previously utilized this same unofficial airstrip to transport arms into Uganda. The discussion about the airstrip was reportedly part of broader conversations concerning an escape strategy, including the “stamping of passports,” to facilitate their departure.

As evidence, the prosecution presented clips from a lengthy video recording secretly made by Wilson during meetings allegedly attended by Dr. Besigye. In one segment, a man identified by the prosecution as Dr. Besigye is seen giving Wilson an index card. Wilson testified that this card contained details about the Mahagi airstrip. He also claimed that Dr. Besigye had mentioned that “our people” would be present at the airstrip to receive logistics and assist with the escape, including planning for aircraft refueling and cargo weight.

The court heard that the alleged operation also involved considerations for logistical support upon arrival at the airstrip. The case, which involves allegations of treason and related offenses, continues next Tuesday.
