Nakaseke North MP Protests Unequal Road Funding, Walks Out of Committee

Wilbur Aheebwa, the Member of Parliament for Nakaseke North and Chairperson of the District Roads Committee, expressed his strong disapproval of the proposed road funding distribution. He walked out of a committee meeting after learning that three sub-counties in his constituency – Kinoni, Ngoma, and Kinyogoga – were collectively allocated a mere Shs24 million for road works.

This allocation is particularly concerning given that these sub-counties collectively manage over 380 kilometers of roads that require significant attention. In stark contrast, Nakaseke South received a substantial Shs989 million for its road-related projects.

During the meeting, Aheebwa highlighted the disparity, noting that Ngoma Sub-County, with approximately 130 kilometers of roads, received Shs8 million, while Kinoni (120 kilometers) received Shs6 million, and Kinyogoga (over 130 kilometers) received Shs10 million. This is in sharp contrast to Nakaseke South’s allocations, which include Shs200 million for Semuto Sub-County and Shs200 million for Kapeeka Sub-County.

Aheebwa emphasized that his protest stemmed from a desire for fairness and equitable distribution based on the actual road network length within each area. He stated his commitment to representing his constituents’ needs and vowed to return only when the allocations were reconsidered.

District officials, including Deputy Chairperson Benjamin Makanga, acknowledged the concerns and indicated a willingness to engage with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Works and Transport to seek supplementary funding or adjustments. District Engineer Steven Sekayingo, however, noted that the current allocations were part of an approved budget process, implying that significant changes would require higher-level intervention.

The situation has placed pressure on district authorities to re-evaluate the funding structure to ensure a more balanced approach to road infrastructure development across Nakaseke District.
