Norway Mourns King Harald V, Who Dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway, a popular and unifying figure who modernized the monarchy, died Friday morning at the age of 89. His passing was confirmed by the Royal Palace in Oslo, which announced he died peacefully at 6:35 AM local time at the national hospital.

Harald, Norway’s first king born in the country since the 14th century, had been hospitalized the previous week for a rare blood condition. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has now ascended to the throne as King Haakon VI.

Throughout his 35-year reign, King Harald was celebrated for his down-to-earth demeanor and his role in making the monarchy more egalitarian. He broke with tradition by marrying a commoner, Sonja Haraldsen, and later supported his children marrying individuals outside of nobility.

He was a unifying presence for Norway, notably in the aftermath of the 2011 terrorist attacks. During that difficult period, he urged Norwegians to support each other and resist fear. He also championed diversity, delivering a powerful speech in 2016 supporting people of all religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.

A keen athlete, King Harald represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games. His recent years were marked by declining health and family challenges, including scandals involving his daughter-in-law and grandson, which put the monarchy under increased public scrutiny. Despite these challenges, he remained a widely respected and beloved figure.

King Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, his son King Haakon VI, his daughter Princess Märtha Louise, and six grandchildren.
