Standard Chartered Boosts Ebola Preparedness with Shs186 Million Donation

Standard Chartered Bank Uganda has made a significant contribution of approximately Shs186 million to Save the Children. This donation is earmarked to bolster efforts in communities affected by the recent Ebola outbreak and to strengthen ongoing prevention and preparedness strategies, especially after Uganda was declared Ebola-free.
The allocated funds will support critical initiatives such as risk communication, community engagement, infection prevention and control measures, and the early detection and referral of potential cases. Furthermore, the funding will aid in raising community awareness and mobilizing public support for health guidelines.
These programs aim to equip children, families, and frontline communities with the knowledge to understand Ebola risks, identify symptoms, and seek timely medical attention, aligning with the Ministry of Health’s recommendations.
Charles Katongole, Acting CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, acknowledged the collective efforts that led to the country’s Ebola-free status, including those of the government, health workers, and communities. “Protecting this achievement requires continued vigilance and preparedness,” he stated, emphasizing the bank’s role in supporting Save the Children’s work to keep families safe.
Katongole highlighted that this donation is part of the bank’s broader commitment to Uganda’s development, extending beyond health to finance national priorities that improve livelihoods. He noted the bank’s recent arrangement of €752 million in financing for four government projects in sectors like power, water, sanitation, roads, and tourism.
Martha Dambya, Acting Country Director for Save the Children, welcomed the support, stressing the importance of sustained community engagement for maintaining Uganda’s health security. “Keeping Uganda Ebola-free requires sustained community engagement, trusted information, early detection and strong collaboration with government and partners,” she said.
This collaboration between Standard Chartered and Save the Children builds on past partnerships and aims to enhance community resilience against future public health emergencies, aligning with the Standard Chartered Foundation’s focus on economic inclusion and wellbeing for underserved populations.
