Uganda and Italy Boost Coffee, Trade, and Investment Ties

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has underscored Uganda’s dedication to strengthening its relationship with Italy, with a particular emphasis on key sectors like coffee development, trade, and investment. These commitments were reiterated during a meeting with the Italian Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Mauro Massoni, at State House.
Ambassador Massoni updated the President on the progress of existing collaborations and shared details about an upcoming visit by a high-level Italian delegation. This delegation, expected to include representatives from Italy’s development and export finance sector, alongside business leaders, will engage with Ugandan counterparts to identify and pursue areas of mutual benefit.
A significant focus of the discussions was the coffee sector. Ambassador Massoni highlighted ongoing efforts to support Uganda’s coffee industry and its smallholder farmers through a dedicated development project. The delegation’s visit will also coincide with preparations for the groundbreaking of a Coffee House at Kyambogo University.
Furthermore, both nations are preparing for the Uganda Business Forum, slated to take place in Rome this October. This event aims to bring together Ugandan and Italian businesses to explore new trade and investment opportunities, with Uganda’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives expected to participate.
The meeting also touched upon infrastructure and investment, including the Tororo Cement project. President Museveni expressed keen interest in initiatives that could bolster Uganda’s regional transport and trade networks, specifically mentioning improvements to railway connections towards Tanzania.
In a demonstration of cooperation in human capital development, Ambassador Massoni noted that medical professionals from Lubowa Hospital are currently undergoing training in Italy, underscoring the expanding partnership in healthcare and skills development.
These ongoing engagements signal a strong mutual desire from both Uganda and Italy to cultivate deeper bilateral ties, promoting increased trade, investment, technology exchange, and skills partnerships.
