Uganda Mourns King Oyo: Tributes Pour In for Visionary Tooro Monarch

The nation is in mourning following the death of Omukama (King) Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom. Cultural institutions and political figures have united in expressing their grief, paying tribute to the young monarch’s significant contributions to his kingdom and the country.

Leaders from various cultural institutions, including Buganda, Busoga, Alur, and Ankole, have shared heartfelt condolences. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, highlighted the deep historical ties between Buganda and Tooro, noting King Oyo’s role in fostering these relationships since his ascension to the throne at the age of three. The Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Nadiope IV, praised King Oyo’s dedication to the Tooro people, stating his legacy would last for generations.

Political parties, such as the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the Justice Forum (JEEMA), also offered their respects. The FDC described King Oyo as a leader who united his subjects across political and religious divides, commending his advocacy for youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and environmental conservation during his 31-year reign. JEEMA echoed these sentiments, remembering him as a humble and visionary cultural leader who symbolized peace and development.

Born on April 16, 1992, King Oyo ascended to the throne on September 12, 1995, at just three years old, following the death of his father. He was formally crowned as an adult in April 2010. His reign, spanning 31 years, saw him grow from a child king into an accomplished leader who championed critical social causes.

The Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, confirmed that King Oyo passed away on Thursday, August 27, at the age of 34. His death marks a profound loss for Tooro and the broader Ugandan cultural landscape. Official funeral arrangements are expected from the Tooro Kingdom.
