Uganda is capitalizing on a burgeoning global sports tourism market, not by aiming to be a destination, but by simply providing a seamless experience that attracts athletes from around the world. The nation’s highlands, situated at a beneficial altitude of 2,000 meters, offer an ideal environment for endurance athletes to train and enhance their aerobic capacity without the risks associated with extreme conditions.
This geographical advantage is significantly amplified by Uganda’s competitive pricing. International athletes and teams can access facilities and services that are comparable, if not superior, to those found elsewhere, at a fraction of the cost. For instance, training costs can range from $60 to $120 per person, with a team of 20 athletes training for three months potentially injecting nearly $200,000 into the local economy through direct and indirect spending.
The success of events like the Rwenzori Marathon highlights Uganda’s growing appeal. This event has transformed from a niche ultra-running competition into a significant draw for endurance athletes globally, who not only participate in the race but also utilize the period for pre-race training. This cyclical pattern of athletes visiting, training, and recommending the destination is crucial for building a robust sports tourism market.
The nation is poised for an even greater leap with its co-hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2027. This major continental football tournament is expected to attract approximately one million tourists and will serve as a global showcase for Uganda’s infrastructure, organizational capabilities, and hospitality. The three years leading up to Afcon provide a critical window to solidify Uganda’s position as a world-class sports destination.
Post-Afcon, the established infrastructure, demonstrated organizational competence, and international exposure will lay the groundwork for attracting athletes across various disciplines. Strategic investments in specialized sports facilities and partnerships with sports science institutions are essential to cement Uganda’s reputation. The opportunity is present, with athletes already choosing Uganda and Afcon on the horizon, presenting a chance to lead the sports tourism market before competitors fully recognize its potential.
