Uganda to Fund Veteran Projects in Mozambique, First Phase Targets Montepuez Barracks

Uganda is set to launch a series of projects in Mozambique aimed at supporting veterans and commemorating shared historical ties. Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka announced that funding is in place and implementation will begin this financial year, following approval from the highest levels of government.

The initial phase of the initiative will focus on constructing a dormitory at the former military training barracks located in Montepuez, Cabo Delgado Province. This project is part of a broader commitment by Uganda to refurbish accommodation facilities and support other veteran-related initiatives.

Beyond the dormitory, Uganda plans to enhance a technical institute in Montepuez and establish agricultural and agro-processing ventures designed to benefit veterans of Mozambique’s liberation movement, FRELIMO. These efforts stem from a commitment made by President Yoweri Museveni during his 2018 state visit to Mozambique.

Minister Kiwanuka emphasized that the projects are a gesture of gratitude for Mozambique’s historical support during Uganda’s liberation struggle, rather than a commercial venture. He highlighted the crucial role Mozambique played in aiding Ugandan liberation fighters and stressed the importance of preserving this shared history for future generations.

During a meeting with Mozambique’s Minister of Combatants, Nyeleti Brooke Mondlane, Minister Kiwanuka urged the Mozambican government to finalize outstanding approvals to ensure a smooth start to construction. Minister Mondlane welcomed Uganda’s commitment, affirming Mozambique’s readiness to collaborate on a phased implementation.

This initiative is expected to serve as a tangible reminder of the strong historical links between the two nations, particularly Mozambique’s past support for Uganda’s freedom fighters. Successful project completion could also pave the way for expanded cooperation in veteran affairs between Uganda and Mozambique.
