A somber situation has emerged in Parliament as the National Female Youth Representative, Mercy Kanyesigye, brought to light the distress of around 40 Ugandan women allegedly trafficked to India. These women claim to have been lured to the Asian nation with promises of legitimate employment, only to find themselves ensnared in forced prostitution.
Kanyesigye informed the House that she is in possession of a list detailing the names of these affected individuals, all of whom are desperate to return to Uganda but lack the necessary financial resources and support to facilitate their repatriation.
“These young people are ready to come back, but they do not have ways to get back to the country,” Kanyesigye stated, appealing directly to the Ministries of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and Foreign Affairs to intervene. She emphasized the government’s responsibility, stating, “They are Ugandans, they need our protection.”
The legislator further called for the expedited finalization of bilateral labour agreements with countries such as India, Thailand, and Cambodia. Kanyesigye argued that the absence of robust protection frameworks leaves Ugandan migrant workers exceedingly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, a concern that aligns with ongoing reports of Ugandans falling victim to fraudulent recruitment agencies.
She urged the government to strengthen the regulation of labour recruitment agencies and enhance protection mechanisms for all Ugandans seeking employment opportunities abroad, ensuring their safety and well-being.
