UPDF Promotes 66 Officers to General and Senior Ranks

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially recognized the achievements of 66 officers through a decoration ceremony for their recent promotions to general and senior ranks. The event, held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala, saw 27 officers elevated to general ranks and 39 to senior positions.
Presiding over the ceremony, Deputy CDF and Inspector General of the UPDF, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, emphasized that these promotions are a testament to the officers’ years of service, sacrifice, discipline, and leadership. He noted that such advancements are significant not only for the individuals and their families but also for the nation.
Lt Gen Okiding also extended his appreciation to the spouses and families of the military personnel. He acknowledged the sacrifices they make, enduring prolonged deployments, frequent transfers, and periods of separation that are inherent to military life.
The Joint Staff Human Resource Management, Maj Gen James Kinalwa, stated that these promotions are part of the UPDF’s ongoing commitment to professionalizing the force. He highlighted that the advancement system is rooted in competence, dedication, and consistent performance.
Maj Gen Kinalwa encouraged the newly decorated officers to leverage their expertise and knowledge to enhance leadership within the UPDF and to effectively mentor their subordinates. Representing the promoted officers, Commander Reserve Force Maj Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga acknowledged that higher ranks bring increased public scrutiny. He urged his colleagues to lead by example, uphold discipline, and maintain integrity, recognizing that their conduct directly impacts the UPDF’s image.
Several high-ranking officials attended the ceremony, including Chief of Joint Staff Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba and Commander Air Force Lt Gen Charles Okidi, underscoring the significance of the occasion. The event celebrated the dedication and career progression of these UPDF officers.
