Vice President Maj. Jessica Alupo has recognized the invaluable role of the Holy Orthodox Metropolis of Mityana in supporting the Ugandan government’s agenda to uplift communities and eradicate poverty.

During celebrations for the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, Alupo, represented by the Minister of State for Kampala, Joseph Kyofatogabye, expressed gratitude for the church’s efforts in improving social and economic well-being.

“We commend the Orthodox Church in Mityana for the important work it is doing to complement government efforts in improving the livelihoods of our people and fighting poverty,” Alupo stated. She emphasized the crucial role religious leaders play in instilling values of hard work, self-reliance, and active participation in poverty reduction programs.

The Vice President encouraged members of the Orthodox Church and the wider community to leverage government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and other economic empowerment schemes to boost household incomes.

Alupo also pledged the government’s unwavering support for religious institutions engaged in initiatives that demonstrably improve the welfare of Ugandans, particularly those facing economic hardship. “Government will continue to support religious institutions in areas where their work contributes to improving the lives and welfare of our people,” she affirmed.

The event also provided a platform for His Eminence Archbishop Nektarios Leonard Lubega to call upon Christians to uphold virtuous living and positive conduct, drawing inspiration from the example of the Virgin Mary. He urged believers to internalize her virtues to guide their daily actions and strengthen their faith.

The Feast of the Dormition served as a convergence point for Orthodox Christians and guests in Mityana, highlighting the Church’s dual commitment to spiritual guidance and community development.
