Babiito Elders Form Committee to Guide Tooro Succession

The Babiito royal clan has taken a significant step in ensuring a smooth transition of power by establishing a 21-member committee of elders. This body is tasked with overseeing the traditional and cultural protocols for selecting and announcing the successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV.
The committee was formed at the first official clan meeting held after the King’s passing. Its core mandate includes identifying the rightful heir and preparing the necessary traditional ceremonies, reinforcing the clan’s commitment to unity and inclusivity during this period.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Musuuga, the traditional head of the Babiito clan, the succession process is strictly a cultural right vested in his office. The statement emphasized that the clan bears the responsibility for these succession plans and protocols on behalf of the people of Tooro.
The formation of this committee follows assurances from Tooro Kingdom officials and President Yoweri Museveni himself regarding the existence of an heir. The Kingdom’s Prime Minister confirmed that King Oyo left behind a prince, whose identity will be revealed at the appropriate time according to tradition.
President Museveni also confirmed this information after speaking with the Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, who stated that the late King had a young heir who will be introduced publicly soon. The President commended King Oyo’s legacy of cooperation with the central government.
The newly formed 21-member committee, operating under the Musuuga’s leadership, will now proceed with the crucial tasks of formalizing the succession and preparing the kingdom for its next monarch.
