Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has sent four young activists to Luzira Prison pending trial. Aniwallh Ssembalirwa, Hassan Mugoya, Aron Patrick Ariong, and Ivan Okanya, all members of the civic group “Rooted in Resistance,” were arrested on August 10.
Their arrest occurred as they marched towards Parliament to present a petition focused on Uganda’s oil sector. The group advocates for greater accountability and public involvement in the management of the country’s natural resources.
Appearing in court on Friday, August 29, 2026, the four faced charges of public nuisance. The prosecution presented its case, leading to the decision to remand the accused until September 4, 2026.
During the proceedings, the defense lawyer, Mr. Peter Arinaitwe, emphasized the need for a fair and unbiased hearing. He expressed concern that the court might be influenced by a previous case involving eight individuals convicted for a similar offense, stressing that each case should be judged on its unique merits.
Magistrate Achayo Rophine acknowledged the lawyer’s concerns but noted that she had previously issued a warning regarding such actions, referencing the earlier conviction of the eight people. The defense is scheduled to make another appearance on September 4, when the case will be further heard.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding activism related to Uganda’s burgeoning oil industry and the government’s response to public demonstrations. The “Rooted in Resistance” group continues its efforts to ensure transparency and public input in the handling of national resources.
