Fear grips Bukasa Village in Mpigi District as residents report a disturbing rise in crime and intimidation attributed to a youth gang identifying as the “Mafia”. The group has reportedly established a “Mafia Zone” within the village, operating with impunity, particularly after dark.
During a visit by Mpigi District Chairperson Simon Peter Kawuki, community members voiced their deep concerns, describing a pervasive sense of insecurity. They claim the gang members move around armed with weapons like machetes, threatening anyone who resists their activities. The fear is so palpable that residents reportedly sleep with their motorcycles inside their homes to prevent theft.
Women and girls are allegedly being targeted, with attacks occurring even during daylight hours. The situation has become so dire that some parents have sent their daughters to stay in neighboring villages for safety. Residents also shared harrowing accounts of individuals being attacked and threatened for speaking out against the gang. Those working night shifts face particular risks, with some needing escorts home to avoid potential assaults.
Local leaders, including NRM Chairperson for Kituntu Sub-county John Bosco Serwadda, suggest that substance abuse fuels some of the criminal behavior. He noted that the youths often appear to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol when carrying out their actions.
In response to the residents’ pleas, District Chairperson Simon Peter Kawuki has pledged to address the matter with district security authorities. He promised to bring the issue to the district security meeting agenda and assured residents that action would be taken if the allegations are substantiated. Kawuki also apologized to the victims and vowed to coordinate an operation to apprehend those involved.
Bukasa’s status as a rapidly developing urban center is believed by some to be attracting these criminal elements. Authorities are expected to investigate the claims thoroughly and implement necessary security measures to restore peace to the area.
