Nabilatuk Bush Fire Displaces 50 Households

Residents of Ajokalup Village in Nabilatuk District are reeling after a destructive bush fire swept through their community, leaving an estimated 50 households without shelter. The flames consumed not only homes but also valuable household property, leaving hundreds of individuals to face significant losses.

One affected resident, Samson Lokol, recounted the devastating experience, stating, “We lost everything in the fire because we were not around when it started.” This sentiment is shared by many who were unable to save their belongings as the fire spread rapidly.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the fire may have originated from shepherds hunting rats, with dry vegetation quickly fanning the flames towards nearby dwellings. Adding to the hardship, some of the recently distributed emergency food relief for vulnerable families was also lost in the inferno.

This destruction comes at a critical time, as the community is already grappling with food shortages and the persistent effects of a prolonged drought. The fire has amplified these existing challenges, creating an urgent humanitarian situation.

Nabilatuk District Chairperson Benedic Lokiru has made an urgent appeal to the government and development partners for immediate support for the affected families. “The affected families need urgent assistance from government and development partners because they have lost their homes, food and other property,” Lokiru stated.

Local leaders are also emphasizing the need for greater public education regarding the dangers of bush fires, particularly during dry spells, to prevent future tragedies.
