Recounting the Ceremonial Ascent of King Oyo in Tooro Kingdom

The enthronement of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, which took place on September 12, 1995, was a deeply symbolic event that followed the untimely death of his father, Patrick Olimi Kaboyo II, on August 26, 1995. The young monarch, then only three years old, ascended the throne amidst a populace gathered in fervent anticipation.

Charles Kamurasi, identified as Omujwera Musuuga and head of the Babiito royal clan, played a crucial role in the elaborate rituals. He recounted that King Oyo’s father had entrusted him with the responsibility of guiding the young heir even before his diplomatic assignment in Cuba. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa gave birth to Oyo in Kampala in 1992, and Kamurasi, along with Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, nurtured the young prince and his sister until their father’s return.

Following his father’s death, a nine-day mourning period commenced, during which Prince Oyo performed significant rituals, including placing nine coffee beans in his father’s grave. The subsequent preparation for his enthronement involved another nine days of ritualistic observance, overseen by Kamurasi and the royal clan. The kingdom itself mourned, with traditional symbols of power, such as the royal drum and stool, turned upside down until the new king’s ascension.

The night before the official coronation, September 11, 1995, was marked by ancient ceremonies. Oyo was carried from his late father’s home to the palace, accompanied by a multitude of people holding firebrands. Upon reaching the palace gates, a ritualistic ‘resistance’ was performed, symbolizing a challenge to the new king’s authority, which he successfully overcame. Further rituals inside the palace involved touching an axe and striking the royal drum nine times, binding him to the ancestral lineage.

The following day, September 12, saw further ceremonies, including Oyo being seated on the royal stool and a church service. The culmination was the placement of the crown upon his head by Mr. Kagoro Darlington. Due to his tender age, a council of regents managed the kingdom’s affairs until King Oyo attained the age of 18 in 2010, with Kamurasi continuing to play a vital advisory role.
