Tooro Kingdom Enters Nine Days of Mourning for Late King Oyo

The Tooro Kingdom has entered a somber nine-day period of mourning after the passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV. This traditional observance, announced by the head of the royal Babibiito clan, Mr. Charles Kamurasi, signifies the end of the late King’s reign and ushers in a time of solemn remembrance.

During this period, several significant cultural rituals are being performed. The familiar Tooro Kingdom anthem, a symbol of loyalty to the monarch, will fall silent, and will only resume after a new King is enthroned. Additionally, all kingdom flags will fly at half-mast, and the iconic lion symbol, representing royal authority, will be covered in public spaces, signifying the absence of the King’s presence and power.

These rituals, overseen by clan elders and ritualists, officially mark the beginning of the mourning period and serve to communicate the monarch’s passing to the subjects. The upside-down royal drum, a key piece of regalia, is also turned to symbolize the closure of the reigning King’s era.

The nine-day period will also run concurrently with the necessary arrangements for the King’s final send-off and the subsequent succession process by the Babiito clan. An organizing committee has been formed to coordinate these preparations, working closely with the kingdom and potentially national committees.

Ecumenical services are also scheduled throughout the mourning period, starting with evening services at the palace. The kingdom is calling for peaceful participation in these activities, encouraging subjects to collectively mourn, comfort the royal family, and prepare to give King Oyo a dignified farewell.

King Oyo, who ascended the throne at the tender age of three and reigned for over three decades, passed away in the United States after an illness. His death marks a significant moment for the Tooro people as they navigate this period of cultural tradition and transition.
