Tooro Kingdom suspends anthem, turns royal drums upside down to mourn King Oyo

Tooro Kingdom has officially commenced a nine-day period of mourning for the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, following his passing on Thursday night in the United States. The kingdom is now observing ancient cultural rites and has temporarily suspended key royal symbols as preparations for the King’s final send-off and the subsequent succession process begin.

Prince Charles Kamurasi, head of the royal Babiito clan and uncle to the late monarch, formally announced the King’s death, urging subjects to maintain calm and respect traditional customs. The mourning period, strictly prescribed by Tooro tradition for a reigning king, will also be used to finalize arrangements for the burial.

In line with centuries-old customs, ritualists have turned the royal drum, the Engoma, upside down, signifying the end of the current monarch’s reign. This act, alongside the sounding of a ceremonial alarm by clan members at the palace entrance, officially announced the King’s demise to the public.

During the nine-day period, several public symbols of royal authority are being altered. The Tooro Kingdom anthem will not be played at official functions until a new king is enthroned. Additionally, all kingdom flags are flying at half-mast, and representations of the lion, a central emblem of Tooro royal authority, are being covered in public spaces, symbolizing the King’s absence and the temporary pause of his authority.

These symbols will remain covered until the Babiito clan completes the succession process and officially proclaims the next king. Daily ecumenical prayer services are scheduled to begin at the royal palace, and the funeral organizing committee will convene daily to coordinate logistics. Subjects and well-wishers are called upon to participate peacefully in the mourning activities and support the royal family in giving the late monarch a fitting farewell.
