Lifeguard Condom Prices Plummet to Shs700 as HIV Infections Surge in Uganda

Marie Stopes Uganda has significantly lowered the price of its Lifeguard condoms, now retailing at Shs700, down from Shs2,000. This price reduction is a direct response to alarming increases in new HIV/AIDS infections reported nationwide.

The announcement was made during the launch of the “Guard Your Game” campaign in Kasenge, Wakiso District. Sandra Arinaitwe, Head of Marketing and Communications at Marie Stopes Uganda, emphasized that the move aims to make protection more accessible, especially in high-risk areas.

Wakiso District was chosen as the campaign’s starting point due to its high HIV transmission rates, with an estimated 2,000 new cases reported monthly. Kampala is also facing a significant burden, with around 210 new cases weekly.

The “Guard Your Game” campaign will utilize mobile trucks to distribute the subsidized condoms in regions most affected by HIV. This effort is particularly focused on young people aged 20-24 and areas with a high influx of migrants, often driven by economic activities.

Recent data from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) indicates that approximately 30 people are contracting HIV daily in Kampala, based on tests from over 649,000 individuals. Health officials suspect that factors such as unregulated activities in massage parlors and spas, domestic violence, social inequalities, and exposure through social media may be contributing to this new wave of infections.

This initiative seeks to encourage consistent condom use as a vital tool in safeguarding public health against the escalating HIV epidemic.
