Minister Nyamutoro Emphasizes Daily Environmental Responsibility on National Cleaning Day

State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro joined residents and local leaders in Kucwiny Sub-county to mark the Second National Cleaning Day, emphasizing that environmental stewardship is a collective and daily responsibility.

Nyamutoro participated in cleaning local trading centers and homesteads, stressing the direct link between a clean environment, personal health, and sustainable development. She highlighted that environmental protection should not solely fall on the government’s shoulders, but should be an integral part of every citizen’s routine.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to see that we have a clean environment and a better Uganda. When we protect our environment, we protect our personal health and our food,” Nyamutoro stated during the exercise. She expressed hope that the enthusiasm shown by the community would continue even after the national event.

The National Cleaning Day initiative aims to foster a nationwide culture of cleanliness and environmental consciousness, addressing critical issues like poor waste management and degradation. These problems are linked to numerous preventable diseases, food insecurity, and the broader impacts of climate change.

Robert Kumakech, Kucwiny Sub-county LC III chairperson, commended the government for the initiative, noting its positive impact on hygiene practices, especially in rural areas where such practices have historically been a challenge. He observed a significant improvement in the cleanliness of public spaces, which he believes will aid in preventing diseases like cholera.

Local leaders and residents alike welcomed the Minister’s hands-on participation, seeing it as a strong encouragement for the community to take environmental protection more seriously. The Ministry of Health reports that a substantial percentage of preventable diseases in Uganda stem from unhygienic conditions, underscoring the importance of regular cleaning.

Minister Nyamutoro pledged ongoing collaboration with local leaders to maintain the progress made and reiterated her call for households to integrate cleaning into their daily lives.
