Ntungamo Municipality joined the nationwide effort during the second National Cleaning Day, with a significant turnout of residents, traders, and local officials dedicated to enhancing the town’s cleanliness. The exercise saw participants sweeping verandas, clearing drainage systems, and removing litter from streets and market areas, all aimed at improving public health and preventing disease.
At the Ntungamo Municipal Matooke Market, traders and community members worked together to clear accumulated waste, transforming the market’s appearance and creating a more pleasant environment for commerce. Participants like Silili Katsyamutwe expressed satisfaction with the visible improvement, noting the market’s previously littered state.
Despite the widespread participation, some traders and residents did not join the initiative. This lack of engagement has prompted local authorities to consider penalties for those who ignored the call to action. The market workers’ chairperson warned that businesses that deliberately skipped the cleaning day could face operational restrictions.
Concerns were also raised about the need for better coordination in future events to ensure unified participation. Calls were made for earlier mobilization to allow everyone to commence and complete cleaning tasks together.
Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner Miriam Kagaiga Mugisha commended those who participated but reiterated the warning to businesses that remained closed or uninvolved. She indicated that enforcement actions would be taken based on reports of non-compliance, emphasizing the importance of sustained community involvement in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all.
