President Museveni Highlights East African Revival's Transformative Impact on Ankole

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently celebrated the 90th anniversary of the East African Revival in Ankole, marking its significant role in the region’s transformation. Speaking at St. John’s Cathedral, Ruharo, in Mbarara City, Museveni emphasized how the Revival movement, which took root in Ankole in 1936, addressed critical social challenges.

The movement actively combated issues such as alcoholism, adultery, dishonesty, poor hygiene, and harmful traditional practices. Simultaneously, it promoted education, discipline, and a principled approach to Christian living. President Museveni noted that the Revival was instrumental in saving Ankole from widespread drunkenness and challenged destructive habits like tobacco use, especially among women.

Reflecting on his personal connection to the area, the President recalled his family’s initial reluctance to join the Church of Uganda upon the arrival of missionaries, with his own conversion happening in 1947. He shared poignant memories of his childhood visits to Ruharo, underscoring the deep historical roots of his faith and the community.

Museveni also commended the Revival’s promotion of education and healthier practices, such as boiling milk and water. He highlighted the movement’s role in encouraging people to seek formal schooling and embrace better hygiene.

Beyond spiritual and social reforms, President Museveni urged the Church to actively participate in socio-economic development, citing initiatives in coffee farming and encouraging modern agricultural practices like irrigation. He also issued a stern warning against environmental degradation, particularly the destruction of wetlands and water catchment areas, which he stated is threatening water sources like the River Rwizi.

In a significant development, President Museveni welcomed the proposal for a museum dedicated to the East African Revival, recognizing it as a crucial step in preserving this vital part of Uganda’s heritage. The celebrations concluded with a recognition of long-standing marriages and individuals who experienced the Revival’s impact decades ago.
