Uganda to Install Advanced Cancer Diagnostic Machines in Regional Hospitals

Uganda is enhancing its cancer diagnostic capabilities with the upcoming installation of four state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan machines. The National Planning Authority (NPA) has approved Shs244 billion (approximately $65 million) for this significant investment in oncology infrastructure.
These advanced machines are expected to arrive in the country within the next three months. They will be strategically placed in four regional referral hospitals located in Arua, Mbale, Gulu, and Mbarara. This move is anticipated to drastically improve early cancer detection rates across the nation.
Until now, Ugandans needing PET scan services have been forced to seek treatment abroad in countries like Kenya, Egypt, India, and South Africa. This often involves substantial financial costs, placing a heavy burden on affected families.
The NPA’s Executive Director, Dr. Joseph Muvawala, highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the economic impact of non-communicable diseases. He stated that cancer is one of the most financially draining conditions, frequently leading to household financial distress. While Jinja is not among the initial four locations for these machines, Dr. Muvawala confirmed the funding has been authorized for regional deployment.
The announcement coincided with community efforts like the annual Rotary Cancer Run. This year’s event in Jinja saw strong participation from various local clubs, schools, corporations, and civil society groups. The initiative also received royal endorsement, with the Kyabazinga of Busoga expected to personally lead next year’s Busoga Cancer Run to further galvanize public support.
Leaders at the event stressed the importance of regular medical check-ups and early screening as the most effective strategies for improving treatment outcomes and saving lives from cancer. Catching the disease early is crucial for successful management and prevention.
