Ambassador Aceng Launches Campaign for National Women Council Chairperson

Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng, formerly the head of the Ugandan Mission in Canada, has announced her bid for the National Women Council chairperson. Her campaign centers on a commitment to unite Ugandan women and bolster their engagement in leadership, economic advancement, and crucial decision-making bodies.

Aceng articulated that her motivation stems from a desire to serve and advance women’s interests, rather than personal political gain. She emphasized the need for leadership that is attentive to women’s needs and ensures their concerns are integrated into government planning and programs at all levels.

Leveraging her extensive experience in national and international affairs, Aceng aims to bring skills in diplomacy, leadership, and negotiation to strengthen the Council. She declared, “I am not coming to divide you. I am coming to unite you. I am not coming to compete with women. I am coming to work with women.”

Her platform includes expanding economic opportunities for women, improving access to support networks, and enhancing their businesses. Aceng also intends to champion skilling teenage girls for greater economic independence and to bolster women’s representation in leadership roles across all sectors.

A key focus will be on addressing gender-based violence by empowering women council leaders to lead prevention and response efforts. Aceng also plans to utilize her international connections to forge partnerships and secure support for women and the Council.

Furthermore, she proposes strengthening the capacity of women leaders to monitor government program implementation and service delivery. Aceng advocates for a more significant role for women council leaders in local government planning, including ex-officio membership in councils, to ensure women’s issues are embedded in development plans. She also highlighted health concerns, such as cervical, ovarian, and breast cancers, and proposed using women council structures to raise awareness and promote early health-seeking behavior.

Aceng urged women across Uganda to unite behind her campaign, emphasizing experience and service over divisive tactics or empty promises. She envisions the National Women Council as a powerful platform where the aspirations and concerns of every Ugandan woman are effectively heard and acted upon.

Notably, Aceng’s tenure in Canada concluded prematurely in August 2024 after being declared persona non grata following a confrontation with protesters. Canadian authorities deemed her conduct inconsistent with diplomatic norms.
