Ex-Envoy Acheng Joins National Women Council Race as Independent

Ambassador Joy Ruth Acheng, who previously served as Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, has officially entered the race for the chairperson of the National Women Council. Acheng announced her independent candidacy in Kampala, emphasizing her commitment to providing inclusive and responsive leadership for women across Uganda.

Her decision to run comes after her diplomatic tenure in Canada concluded abruptly in August 2024. Acheng was declared persona non grata by Canadian authorities following a public confrontation with supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) during a protest in Toronto. The incident involved her responding to accusations of human rights abuses against the Ugandan government, a situation she later clarified as upholding her duties as a presidential appointee.

Acheng, who has also served as Uganda’s ambassador to the Bahamas, believes her international experience has equipped her with the necessary skills in diplomacy, leadership, and negotiation to effectively lead the National Women Council. She aims to enhance women’s participation in national development and decision-making processes.

“My experience has exposed me to different communities, institutions and people both at home and internationally. It has strengthened my understanding of diplomacy, leadership, negotiation and national service. I will bring that experience to the National Women Council,” Acheng stated during her announcement.

She joins a competitive field that includes the incumbent, Faridah Kimbowa, along with other contenders Ann Ruyondo, Irene Adokorach, and Kabakumba Matsiko. Acheng stressed the need for leadership that actively listens to women’s concerns and represents them irrespective of their background. She also pledged to bolster the capacity of women leaders in monitoring government programs and engaging in local government planning.

The elections for the National Women Council are progressing through various administrative levels, culminating in the selection of the national chairperson who oversees the council’s extensive network aimed at mobilizing women and promoting their involvement in Uganda’s social, political, and economic spheres.
