Katosi Water Project Expansion to Boost Supply in Greater Kampala by 2027

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is actively working to expand the water supply network across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA), addressing the escalating demand in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and adjacent regions.

This ambitious initiative, part of the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project (Package 2B), aims to connect more communities to the high-capacity Katosi Water Treatment Plant.

Key components of the project include the construction of 71 kilometers of transmission mains, three new water reservoirs, and two booster stations. Additionally, the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, crucial for monitoring and managing the network, will receive upgrades. This infrastructure is designed to ensure adequate water supply for the growing GKMA population until 2040.

A significant milestone is the 7.7-kilometer pipeline, slated for completion in January 2027. This pipeline will specifically improve water access in Namugongo, Kira, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Kasangati, and surrounding areas.

Further enhancing the system are the Kungu and Kabulengwa booster stations, along with new reservoirs in Kanyanya, Mutungo, and Kabulengwa. These additions are intended to optimize water distribution and increase storage capacity, thereby stabilizing the supply.

The expansion is a direct response to the rapid urbanization of Greater Kampala, which has placed considerable strain on existing water infrastructure. NWSC anticipates that these improvements will bring the increased water production from Katosi closer to consumers and significantly strengthen the overall distribution network.

Progress reports indicate steady advancement in the construction of pipelines, booster stations, and reservoirs, with the completion of the 7.7-kilometer pipeline in January 2027 expected to provide the first major relief to the water supply situation.
