Engineers at Lira Regional Referral Hospital have designed and built a specialized transporter to enhance the safety of newborns, especially premature babies, during their journey from delivery rooms or operating theatres to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

This critical device is equipped with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) oxygen systems. This ensures that neonates receive a consistent and appropriate level of oxygen throughout the transfer, minimizing interruptions in care and safeguarding their fragile condition.

The head of the Engineering Department, Eng. Phillip Ddungu, officially presented the transporter to Senior Consultant Paediatrician Dr William Oyang. Dr. Oyang expressed his gratitude, highlighting that the innovation is expected to significantly improve the health outcomes for newborns and reduce the risks of complications like brain damage during transport.

Staff like Sr Betty Apio, who manages the Labour Suite, have long identified the challenges in safely moving premature infants. She stated that the new transporter will streamline this process, making it more efficient and secure, thereby lowering the inherent risks.

Eng. Ddungu further elaborated that the transporter is designed with additional features, including temperature monitors and other essential ICU equipment, to allow for continuous and robust management of neonates during transit.

This development is particularly significant given Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s admission of approximately 1,100 neonates annually. The innovation follows a recent upgrade of the hospital’s NICU to Level III, expanding its capacity for complex neonatal cases. The baby transporter represents a commitment to improving patient safety through locally developed solutions.
