Mothers Union Urged to Merge Faith with Poverty Fight

Leaders of the Mothers Union in the Buganda Region have been challenged to integrate spiritual renewal with practical efforts to uplift communities from poverty. This call came from President Yoweri Museveni in a message delivered by the State Minister for Local Government, Justine Nameere, during the closing of the annual Mothers Union Buganda Conference.
Minister Nameere conveyed the President’s message, emphasizing that combating poverty should be a shared responsibility for all in positions of leadership. “I ask every delegate wherever you come from, return as an agent of not only spiritual renewal, but also for socio-economic transformation, continue to lead by example through action,” Museveni stated.
President Museveni highlighted that the government has established various wealth funds and opportunities designed to help households escape poverty. He encouraged the Mothers Union delegates to guide their communities in utilizing these resources, aligning with the conference theme, “Lighting the Way for Generations to Come.” This, he believes, will foster an economically stable and Godly nation.
Minister Nameere also addressed issues of corruption within local government, urging religious leaders to join the fight for improved service delivery. She implored delegates to instill positive values in young children, noting concerns about unpatriotic behavior and the need for nation-building within families.
During the conference, plans were revealed by the Mothers Union President for Buganda Region, Ms. Josephine Kasaato, to establish a vocational training institute in Luweero District and a rehabilitation center for troubled marriages. These initiatives aim to equip young people with skills for self-reliance and to support struggling families.
The conference also marked the 150th anniversary of the Mothers Union internationally, with the launch of a new website to enhance the visibility of their activities. Bishop Gaster Nsereko of West Buganda Diocese called for humility and responsible leadership, urging leaders to consider the lasting legacy of their actions.
This gathering brought together delegates from six dioceses within the Buganda Region, underscoring the union’s broad reach and commitment to community development. The event concluded with a renewed focus on blending faith-based principles with tangible actions for socio-economic progress.
