Mpigi Halts Sand Transportation Amidst Road Devastation

Mpigi District has taken decisive action, indefinitely suspending all sand transportation activities within Kituntu Sub-county. This move comes in response to the rampant destruction of local roads, some of which were reportedly rehabilitated just two weeks prior.

District Chairperson Peter Kawuki expressed deep concern, highlighting that a single rehabilitated road, costing over Shs120 million, has already succumbed to damage from heavy sand trucks. He noted that these “Sinotrucks” are responsible for the rapid deterioration, leading to the immediate halt of operations.

“We have just completed working on these roads, but within two weeks, they have been damaged again by Sinotrucks,” Mr. Kawuki stated. He also raised questions about the discrepancy between the extensive sand mining activities and the meager revenue collected by the district. Preliminary findings suggest that Kituntu Sub-county collected only about Shs3 million in the last financial year, despite significant sand extraction.

The district leadership is demanding accountability, asserting that those profiting from sand mining must also contribute to road maintenance. A meeting with all stakeholders, including sand miners, truck operators, and local leaders, is planned to establish a framework for road repair contributions.

Local leaders have further accused some sand truck drivers of reckless driving, leading to dangerous dust clouds that impact businesses and agriculture, and posing risks to residents and animals. Concerns have also been raised about alleged corruption in tax collection related to these activities, with investigations underway.

The suspension serves as a strong message, with authorities indicating that operations will only resume once a clear plan for road maintenance and revenue contribution is agreed upon by all parties involved.
