Nebbi Main Market's Poor Sanitation Exposed During National Cleaning Drive

A routine monthly national cleaning exercise has brought to light the dire sanitary conditions plaguing Nebbi Main Market. Volunteers and district officials, expecting a standard cleanup, were instead met with overwhelming stench and heaps of decomposing waste that had reportedly accumulated for months.

The market’s main drainage channels were found to be severely clogged with plastic bags, food remnants, and bottles. This blockage has led to stagnant water and waste, creating a breeding ground for diseases and a significant health hazard for both vendors and the public.

Robert Abak, the Resident District Commissioner for Nebbi, expressed his dismay at the situation, calling it “unacceptable” and “embarrassing.” He criticized the laxity of vendors and municipal authorities, emphasizing the contradiction of promoting hygiene while the market itself is a health risk. Abak has instructed the municipal council to develop a comprehensive garbage collection plan.

Vendors, while acknowledging the existence of market cleaners employed by the council, stated that their work is often limited to visible areas, leaving the crucial drainage systems neglected. This issue is particularly problematic during the rainy season when clogged drains exacerbate flooding.

Ronnie Japyemo, the LC III Chairperson for Nebbi Central Division, pointed to a “poor mindset” among some market users who reportedly discard waste in drainage channels instead of designated dustbins, contributing to the blockages. Mayor Jackline Opar announced plans for vendor sensitization on garbage management and waste separation, contingent on available funding.

These findings underscore a critical need for improved waste management strategies and a shift in public behaviour to ensure a healthier environment within Nebbi Main Market.
