Oboth and Kadaga to Unite Efforts for Kaliro District's Development

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth and First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga have pledged to work hand-in-hand to address the critical challenges facing Kaliro District. Their commitment follows an outpouring of concerns from residents and local leaders during a thanksgiving ceremony organized by Kaliro North West MP George Patrick Kasaja.

Key issues highlighted included inadequate health services, deficiencies in education, and the dilapidated state of local roads. Concerns were also raised regarding government land in the district. These pressing matters were brought to the fore by the community, prompting the senior government officials to pledge their joint support.

Rebecca Kadaga specifically drew attention to the long-standing road network problems in Kaliro. She urged Speaker Oboth to leverage his position to push for the swift rehabilitation of crucial infrastructure, including the Jinja-Kampala highway. Kadaga emphasized that the road’s poor condition, marked by numerous potholes and congestion, hinders vital regional transport links.

She also pointed out the urgent need for the tarmacking of the Kamuli-Bugaya-Irundu road, which connects several districts, noting that its design phase is yet to be finalized. Beyond infrastructure, Kadaga also touched upon past political challenges faced by leaders from the region, including intimidation.

Meanwhile, Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda issued a directive for the arrest of government officials allegedly involved in the fraudulent sale of government land in Kaliro. She stressed that this land is designated for planned government projects and urged residents to focus on improving food security and economic livelihoods.

Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Isanga Nakadama encouraged residents to engage actively with their elected representatives. She also confirmed that Kaliro North West constituency is slated to receive a Health Centre IV, addressing a significant health need.

Speaker Oboth, in response, praised the unity among Busoga MPs and proposed convening a meeting to strategize on tackling these constituency-level challenges. He suggested holding discussions in Kamuli to map out actionable plans for each financial year. He also advised against changing the name of Busoga University, advocating for its current name to maintain regional identity.
