Parenting Evolves: Experts Urge New Approaches for Today's Children

Parenting styles are undergoing a significant transformation, driven by children’s increased awareness of their rights and their willingness to voice their opinions. This evolving dynamic presents unique challenges for parents accustomed to more traditional disciplinary methods.

Aminah Nakibuule, Head of the Parenting Department at Town Caring Counselors Uganda, emphasizes that contemporary parenting requires a fresh perspective on the parent-child relationship. The goal, she explains, is to maintain parental authority while fostering strong emotional connections and avoiding distance.

Speaking on Salam TV, Nakibuule highlighted that effective parenting starts even before conception, with the crucial choice of a life partner. Prospective parents should consider not only a partner’s character but also their family background, as these factors shape the upbringing environment.

Unlike previous generations who often relied on strictness, today’s children are more informed and rights-conscious. Nakibuule clarifies that this doesn’t mean abandoning discipline but rather integrating guidance and authority with friendship, trust, and open communication.

“Parents should bond with their children by being free with them and being present in their lives,” Nakibuule advised. She warned that excessive strictness can lead children to distance themselves and seek counsel elsewhere, potentially hindering their ability to approach parents with difficulties.

Nakibuule also expressed concern over the limited involvement of fathers in child-rearing. While acknowledging the importance of financial provision, she stressed that it should not substitute a father’s physical and emotional presence. Fathers are urged to actively participate in their children’s lives and create dedicated time for them.

Building an environment of trust is key, where children feel comfortable communicating their experiences without immediate fear of punishment or rejection. This open dialogue allows parents to understand their children’s struggles and intervene proactively.
