Polluted Water, Power Outages Plague Mbale Industrial Park

The Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park, a significant investment hub with over 90 companies and employing more than 14,000 people, is facing severe operational challenges. A primary concern is the rampant pollution of River Nashibisho, which flows through the park. Over 50 large-scale and numerous small-scale distillers in the nearby Musoto area are releasing untreated waste, turning the river black and creating a foul stench that permeates the park.
This pollution has led to a surge in malaria cases among park workers. The stagnant, contaminated water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, causing sleepless nights and frequent absences from work. Factory managers report that malaria cases have doubled, impacting productivity. While the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) previously attempted to address the issue by engaging distillers in setting up a treatment plant, these efforts have stalled.
Adding to these woes is the unstable power supply. Frequent power outages and low voltage are not only disrupting production schedules but also causing damage to expensive machinery, resulting in substantial financial losses. Factory representatives state that the park experiences around 15 power interruptions monthly. The promised installation of a 240 MW substation to ensure reliable electricity has yet to materialize.
Beyond environmental and power issues, the park faces safety concerns. Lack of road signage and traffic police near the park’s entrance contributes to frequent accidents. Investors have also raised alarms about security, citing a recent attack on an employee and incidents of fire outbreaks. Government officials recently visited the park and acknowledged these challenges, stating that funds have been allocated for road maintenance, river widening, and security enhancements, with solutions for waste management and electricity supply in the pipeline.
