Religious Leaders Tasked to Integrate Economic Empowerment in Teachings

Vice President Jessica Alupo has called upon religious leaders across Uganda to expand their spiritual mandates to include tangible efforts towards economic empowerment for their congregations. Speaking through Minister of State for Kampala, Joseph Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye, during prayers commemorating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mityana District, Alupo stressed that religious teachings should not solely focus on spiritual nourishment.

Instead, she advocated for sermons that actively encourage believers to combat poverty, enhance household incomes, and contribute to broader community development. The Vice President acknowledged the Orthodox Church’s existing contributions to poverty alleviation efforts but urged for a more integrated approach.

“Religious leaders should not stop at nurturing the spiritual lives of their followers. The gospel should also encourage people to work, develop their families and find ways of improving their livelihoods,” Alupo stated. She emphasized that churches are vital institutions capable of fostering economic empowerment, particularly crucial given the ongoing economic challenges faced by many Ugandan households.

The government also encouraged religious institutions to maintain close collaboration with state programs aimed at improving community welfare and reducing poverty. Archbishop Nektarios Leonard Lubega of the Orthodox Church, who led the prayers, echoed sentiments of unity and mutual support, drawing inspiration from the life of Mother Mary. He urged Christians to translate spiritual lessons of love and compassion into concrete actions that benefit their communities and the nation.

The call signifies a governmental push to leverage the influential platforms of religious organizations for socio-economic progress, aiming to create a more holistic approach to national development where faith and economic well-being go hand-in-hand.
