Religious Leaders Urged to Combat Corruption Through Sermons

State Minister for Local Government, Ms. Justine Nameere, has emphasized the critical role religious leaders play in the fight against corruption in Uganda. She urged them to utilize their pulpits to condemn the vice and inspire believers to uphold integrity.

Minister Nameere highlighted that corruption has deeply infiltrated public institutions, significantly hindering the effective delivery of government services. She pointed out that officials responsible for managing budgets often misappropriate funds intended for public good.

“All the money in the budgets to provide good services is prepared by chief administrative officers and town clerks, but when it comes to implementation, they turn around and swindle it,” Minister Nameere stated, adding that “This is quite complex and requires prayers from you, religious leaders.”

These remarks were made during the celebrations of Bishop Zakaria Sserwadda’s 51 years of discipleship and 50 years of marriage in Jinja City. The Minister stressed the importance of collaboration between parents and religious figures in instilling values of honesty and character among citizens to curb corruption.

She also encouraged congregants to draw inspiration from religious leaders who exemplify discipline, patience, and commitment to community service. The Prime Minister, through Minister Nameere’s speech, congratulated Bishop Sserwadda and his wife on their significant milestone, acknowledging the contributions of religious leaders to peace and moral guidance.

Bishop Sserwadda shared his journey, attributing his success to patience and perseverance, having started as a banana hawker before entering photography and eventually religious ministry. He has also authored a book, “Pressed but Not Lost,” to motivate others facing challenges.
